Josh Anderson became the inaugural Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia champion by taking a third-place finish in last weekend’s Sandown season finale.

The RM Race Cars driver came to the final round of the season with a comfortable championship lead over his nearest rival Joe Fawcett, having taken a double win at The Bend and further successes at Queensland and Sydney Motorsport Park.

He finished seventh in the opening race of the weekend that took place on a wet-but-drying track, before sealing the deal with third in the finale.

“It’s such a cool feeling to get a championship in this category in its first year,” said Anderson. “I put a lot of pressure on myself, but once I got to third I knew it was enough for the championship.

“It was nice to not have a particularly stressful race, and I’m stoked to be the first Mustang Cup Australia Dark Horse champion.”

Anderson’s RM Race Cars stablemate Josh Trappett claimed victory in the first race, having built up a lead on wet-weather tires and hanging on to his first win of the season by just 0.114 seconds ahead of Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Oli Wickham.

Brock Stinson completed the podium in third for HMO Customer Racing.

In the second race, Wickham banked his third win of the season as he sprinted seven seconds clear of Stinson, who in turn held off Anderson for second.

Fawcett’s title challenge all but ended with a ninth-place finish in the opener before he closed out the season with fifth — still enough to maintain second in the overall standings ahead of Wickham, who missed the opening two rounds of the year.

Despite missing out on the overall title, Fawcett was named the Dark Horse Junior champion, the class open to drivers who are 21 years old or younger.

John Goodacre meanwhile sealed Dark Horse Legends honors with a class win in the first race and a second-place finish behind Ben Dunn in the finale.

The 2027 Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia calendar was announced back in July, and the new season is due to begin at Phillip Island on April 17-18.
