LMGT3 Teams’ Title to Combine Points from Both Entries in 2027

The FIA World Endurance Championship will undergo a change in the points structure for the LMGT3 teams’ championship next year, confirming that points scored from both cars under the same competitor license will be combined to determine the championship positions.
Confirmed on Monday in a virtual meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, the change effectively ends the option of LMGT3 manufacturers to nominate two separate single-car teams for its pair of berths in the WEC.
Currently, each individual entry is scored independently, similar to that in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship or European Le Mans Series.
The Hypercar class, which has a manufacturers’ world championship, instead of a teams’ title, has been singular since the category’s launch in 2021.
“Currently, each car within a two-car team scored points independently, with championship points attributed separately to each entry according to its race number,” a statement from the FIA read.
“The change places the emphasis on overall team performance, with both cars contributing to a single championship campaign.”
All nine of this year’s LMGT3 entrants field two cars apiece, although several, such as The Bend Manthey and Manthey DK Engineering, are under different team names for sponsorship purposes.
The only manufacturer to have split its berths up into two different teams has been Aston Martin, which had Heart of Racing and D’station Racing in the 2024 launch season, with the Japanese squad replaced by Racing Spirit of Leman last year.
Heart of Racing, however, took over the second Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo entry for this season and intends to continue in that capacity in 2027.
