Fletcher Sweeps Road America Weekend in Points Haul

Jeremy Fletcher claimed a sweep of the Toyota GR Cup North America weekend at Road America, gaining ground on points leader Spike Kohlbecker, who retired from the race with suspected mechanical issues.

The Copeland Motorsports driver drove his No. 22 Toyota GR 86 Cup car to the win over second-placed Parker Delong in Sunday’s 45-minute contest, which ended under caution due to an incident by Rutledge Wood.

Max Schweid led the opening laps in his No. 98 RVA Graphics Motorsports by Speed Syndicate entry but immediately came under heavy attack by Fletcher.

Fletcher got around Schweid, who received a warning for blocking, on Lap 8 with 24 minutes to go.

A full-course yellow for Kohlbecker’s stricken car in the grass at pit-out with 15 minutes to go set up a ten-minute run to the finish.

With Legends drivers Wood and Tom Rudnai’s late-race accident, the race ended behind the safety car.

It marked Fletcher’s first-ever weekend sweep, while also becoming the sole winningest driver in the single-make championship, after previously being tied with Gresham Wagner with 13 career wins.

With Kohlbecker’s second retirement in the last three races, Fletcher has provisionally closed to within 13 points of the championship lead with four races to go.

Schweid ended up finishing third after initially dropping to fourth in an intense four-car battle behind Fletcher.

Ethan Goulart finished fourth, with Niko Colby completing the top-five.

Early contender Will Robusto was one of the race’s three retirements after he ran wide on the exit of Turn 5 while battling with Fletcher, resulting in floor damage to his car after going off-course.
