Danny Formal took another step closer to securing the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America title for himself and co-driver Hampus Ericsson with pole position for Race 1 at Misano, while Nick Persing topped qualifying for Race 2.
Formal steered the No. 101 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO2 to a best lap of 1:33.765 during the first of two back-to-back 20-minute qualifying session at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, the site of this weekend’s Lamborghini World Finals.
The Costa Rican outpaced TR3 Racing’s Will Bamber, who sits second in the drivers’ standings, by 0.258 seconds.
With the single point on offer for each individual qualifying session, Formal and Ericsson have extended their points lead over Bamber and Elias de la Torre to 17 points, putting them in a strong position to clinch the title during Race 1 on Thursday.
Nicolas Jamin took Pro-Am pole in third overall at the wheel of the No. 130 ANSA Motorsport Lamborghini, joined on the second row by stablemate Colin Queen aboard the No. 104 sister car.
Nick Persing completed the top five ahead of the No. 167 TR3 machine driven by Jason Hart, who in turn outpaced a pair of Pro entries in the hands of Keawn Tandon and Ernie Francis Jr.
Francis Jr. is still the reigning champion after winning the title with Giano Taurino last year, but is not in title contention after only contesting a partial season.
Glenn McGee captured the Am-class pole for Race 1 in ninth overall with Andy Lee rounding out the overall top ten aboard the ‘Sparklefarts’-liveried No. 114 Flying Lizard Motorsports Lamborghini.
LB Cup pole position was captured by RAFA Racing Team’s Rocky T Bolduc in 18th overall.
Persing Takes Overall Pole for Race 2
Persing, who drives solo aboard the No. 108 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini, beat ANSA Motorsport’s Enzo Geraci to pole position for the second race.
A best lap of 1:33.903, although marginally slower than Formal’s quickest time during the first season, was enough for Persing to remain clear of Geraci by 0.140 seconds.
It marked the second pole position of the season for the WTR driver, following on from Laguna Seca earlier this year.
The California native now trails Formal and Ericsson by 25 points heading into the two deciding races and still has a mathematical chance at winning the championship.
Ericsson took third overall ahead of the No. 177 Forty7 Motorsports Lamborghini of Al Morey, with De la Torre rounding out the overall top five.
Darius Trinka and Mateo Siderman took Pro-Am and Am pole positions for MLT Motorsports and Precision Performance Motorsports, respectively.
Meanwhile, Bolduc completed a clean sweep of LB Cup class poles at the wheel of his No. 199 Lamborghini.
